Christmas in Gothenburg VII

Happy New Year!

This is a photo taken of Götaplatsen and the statue is called Poseidon. I have written more about it before, if you would like to read it, please click here.

Christmas in Gothenburg V

This little park is called Bältesspännarparken and got it’s name thanks to a famous statue that unfortunately is not visible on this photo. In the middle one sees an ice rink decorated in a christmacy way. One can come here and ice skate for free which is really nice. During the summer the ice rink becomes a fountain.

Christmas in Gothenburg IV

I really like this photo and the blue light it catches. It looks very icy and cold ina nice way. This photo is taken from the Kungsportsbron built in 1810 and in the background one can see Stora Teatern (the big theatre) which is irradiated with red light.

Christmas in Gothenburg III

Yes it is quite cold here, even the canal has frozen. In the background one can spot two tiny Christmas trees made of light and a flagpole. The truth is that almost every flagpole has turned into a Christmas tree. Ingenious, if you ask me!

The street along the canal is Stora Nygatan which is quite famous because of its odd numbers. You can find out more about it in my previous post here.

Christmas in Gothenburg II

This statue is called “Kopparmärra” which translated to English would mean “copper mare”. The king on the horse is Karl IX and he was involved in the founding of the early Gothenburg. Moreover, this is a very popular meeting place for the citizens of Gothenburg and I think it is even nicer when it is irradiated by the greenish light which is also part of christmas-light project this year.

PS. I think the shadow makes an dramatic effect. DS.

Christmas in Gothenburg I

From the 13th until the 31th of December thousands of Christmas lights glow over the city. Apparently the theme is “love” and one will find “love-spots” here and there where one is supposed to kiss and hug. I find the decorations beautiful and the theme is cute.

Merry Christmas

I wish You a Merry Christmas!
Lots of love from Gothenburg.

Snow

We got snow in Gothenburg, there might be a white Christmas :)

Tuesday 22 December 2009

Something else

Today I am posting a random photo from Gothenburg. It is actually my piano, but it is at least situated in Gothenburg.

Monday 21 December 2009

Ättestupan at night

The first photo I posted on this blog was taken at this very same place called Ättestupan. It looks diffrent.

Sunday 20 December 2009

Peeping?

No, I would not say that I am peeping. But I like the pattern the colours make in the windows, like if they decided to go for different colour themes.

Saturday 19 December 2009

Gloomy

I must admit that this photo was taken in October, there are no leaves left on the trees and there is actually a tiny layer of snow. Is it too optimistic, hoping for a white Christmas?

Friday 18 December 2009

More nightshots

I really like the green colour of the grass.

Thursday 17 December 2009

NightShots

There is not a lot to say about this photo, it speaks for it self. I love the effect that the red lights do. There is something special about nightshots.

Wednesday 16 December 2009

Stockholm VII

This is just a random photo from Stockholm and I believe it will end this "special" theme. I have to start posting pictures from Gothenburg again. We will see what I might come up with for tomorrow.

Tuesday 15 December 2009

Stockholm VI

This is another photo of the same church as yesterday but from another angle.

Monday 14 December 2009

Stockholm V

The German Church or “S:ta Gertruds kyrka” is situated in the “Old Town”. It used to be a guild but was rebuild into a church during the 1600th centaury. I really like this photo, especially the tree with the rowan-berries.

Sunday 13 December 2009

Stockholm IV

This square is well known in Sweden, it is called Sergels torg and is situated in the central parts of the city. It is different because of its black and white triangles. Whenever the Swedish hockey team wins a championship, it eventually shows up here to celebrate with the fans. I must admit that I got some assistance taking this photo and by the way, can you find me?

Saturday 12 December 2009

Stockholm III

This is what I would call a different statue. It is a begging fox, from the serie "Homeless animal" made by Laura Fords. Notice that the fox keeps a baby on her lap.

Friday 11 December 2009

Stockholm II

The picture is taken at a place called Slussen. What is remarkable about this photo is the "Stomatol" signage in left corner . It is Sweden's first electronic signage and turns 100 years, this year. Not too bad!

Thursday 10 December 2009

Stockholm I

Since am I away from Gothenburg for a couple of days, I will keep on taking photos but in another city. Stockholm is the capital of Sweden, a nice city when all comes around. I will post some random photos, unfortunatelly I will probably not be able to tell you as many intresting fact as otherwise. I will start out with this construction, I call it the ginger bread church.

Note to yourself, never forget to check your ISO-settings.

Wednesday 9 December 2009

Municipal Coat of Arms

This is Gothenburg’s municipal coat of arms, depicting the fighting lion. I might have run out of lions for a while but I am sure there are more of them, I will keep on looking…

Tuesday 8 December 2009

Rösska Museet

This is a museum called ”Rösska” and it focuses on fashion, design and handicraft. Apparently, a designing competition was announced nationally and the greatest Swedish architects took part. Carl Westman won and therefore designed the museum which was finsished in 1916. If you look carefully, you will notice another pair of lion guarding the building. These lions are Chinese and actually foo dogs.

Monday 7 December 2009

More lions

This is the main building that belongs to Gothenburg University, inaugurated in 1907. If you look closely, you will see that it is guarded by a lion on each side.

Sunday 6 December 2009

the Lion

The lion is a common symbol in Gothenburg. Not only does it guard buildings and places all over Gothenburg it is also depicted on the municipal coat of arms. These lions guard the end of "Stora Hamnkanalen".

Saturday 5 December 2009

the Lipstick at night

Let me present, one of Gothenburg's "skyscrapers" at night. As you might recall it is called the lipstick and if you look closely it actually resembles one. If you want to see the previous photo and read some intresting facts click here.

PS. I am sorry it looks like if the skyscraper is tilted, it is just my fault, still learning.

Friday 4 December 2009

I ♥ Gothenburg @ night

This is our harbour at night! The huge steel barque is called “Barken Viking” and nowadays serves as a hotel and restaurant! Who would have guessed that!? It was built in 1907 in Denmark and is the biggest barque built in the Nordic countries. She moved around a lot and made journeys as far as to South America, until she was bought by the city of Gothenburg in 1951 to serve as a school for cooks and sailors.

Unfortunately she does not go on so many trips these days because the suspension bridge over the harbour entrance is lower than the barque’s tallest mast. Hence, it has been trapped in Gothenburg since 1966 when the bridge was built.

By the way, she has 34 sails with an area of 3 690 m2!

Thursday 3 December 2009

Third time lucky!

This is the Cathedral of Gothenburg (Götborgs Domkyrka), finished in 1815. Believe or not, this is the third one because the two previous burned down! It was designed by Carl Wilhem Carlberg who also designed Gunneboslott. The area has been a graveyard for centuries, one assumes that over 20 000 people have been buried here.

Yes, the picture was taken this summer.

Wednesday 2 December 2009

Farwell autumn

I will let the picture talk for it self and I will say farwell to this place for this year. Tomorrow I will show you a church in Gothenburg and maybe come up with some intresting facts.

Tuesday 1 December 2009

Come back!

I am sorry I have not been updating for a while but I will try to make another effort. This photo is depicting the same arch as on one of the previous photos. I kind of miss the red lovely color, it is all gray now. But lets hope for snow! :)
